Gixxer problem at the track

I am not sure if this is the correct forum. Admin, feel free to move this post if it does not belong here.

I know that writing in English, may result in limited replies, but I try anyway. I've just returned from 2 days at the Nordschleife, and 5 days at Val de Vienne in France. Huge problems with my GSX-R, I hope someone have experienced the same and can come up with advice about what to do:

Brakes:
-----------
At Val de Vienne, the brakes would overheat once my laptimes fell below 2 minutes. I was running with Lucas "CAR" pads, but the rest of the brake system was stock. After 30 minutes, the pads would drag so bad it was allmost impossible to rotate the front wheel by hand. A friend crashed on the bacstraight, when the lever went all the way in to the handlebar, and he couldn't reduce speed in time. Tried different pads, replaced brake fluid, removed air from the brakes. Nothing helped.

Throttle position sensor (Drosselklapp sensor):
-----------------------------------------------
My bike has now 2000km on the clock. At 1700km, the engine would hesitate when rolling on the power out of corners. It became worse and worse. Sometimes the engine would die completely, other times it would provide more power than expected, and sometimes it worked as expected. I was told the TPS sensor can be a problem, and that I should have it replaced to one with a green mark on. There are two throttle position sensors. The secondary (top) one already has a green mark. Does this mean it is the new one? Which of the two sensors are the problem, the one at the top or bottom of the EFI?

Engine cutout (tip over sensor?)
---------------------------------
At Nordschleife the engine sometimes cut out down Fuchsröhre, and the same happened at Val de Vienne. Both places, this would happen when going fast on the straights, or when changing down from 4th to 3rd gear. I heard that the tipover sensor can be too sensible, and cause the engine to stop. But I thought this would be a problem only if the rear slides, and not when going gast on the stragiths.

Relays for EFI
---------------
I had problems with connections between the relays and the electrical system, causing the EFI to malfunction. If I removed the smallest relay at the front fairing, and put it back again, the EFI worked as expected. But only for a short time. Then the process had to be repeated. Very annoying indeed.

Wheel alignment
----------------
I had problems removing the rear axle when replacing tires. When installing the tire again, the wheel was impossible to align. Once the axle nut was tightened, the wheel had moved and the chain was too tight. It took me an extra 10 minutes every time I wanted to adjust the chain or install a new tire.

General
---------

The bike is very good when it runs, but I spent more time in the pitgarage to make it run, than I did with my R1 during the last 3 years. I need to make the bike reliable, otherwise it is too much hassle to keep it. Any tips on hoe to improve on the above problems, are highly appreciated. Especially the brake and TPS problems need to be solved before I can use the bike at the track again.

Hi Joerund,

you have mail, but not to all points. The TPS is the one at the bottom. Because of engine cutout and relays for EFI there must be a problem in your harness. Wet? or did someone try to install a transmission shifter and it doesn't work. I mean some guys told to use the tip over sensor to cut ignition. because of wheel alignmeent, I had same problems because it's a little bit different between Yamaha and Suzuki. You know the socket I've built? First turn the axle and put it from left during the wheel to right (nut on the right side - not left), fasten with 50 NM and mwasure - no more problems:)

Thanks for reply, Oliver. I also received your mail. Will replace TPS unit with 2002 model. It was not wet in France, and no changes had been made to the harness. Must be bad connections somewhere.

As for the tipover swtich, check out this link:

Ever heard about this before? The switch on the 1000 is the same as on the 750.

Thanks for tip regarding wheel alignement. Will try next time, but need to have the sockets made first. Could you please write down the measurements?

Is your rear axle difficult to remove? I had to use a rubber hammer to get it out. On the R1, it could be removed by hand, once the wheel was liftet from the ground to align with the axle.

Hi Jörund ! I`m back again from my holidaytrip since some houres.
You have a lot of problems... I can remove my rearaxle by hand - but I push my feet between the ground and the rearwheel, that there is no duty on the axle. Try it in this way.Bye
